S.G.M.S.......home of the Vikings

Welcome to South Gate Middle School Home of the Vikings

I am very excited to welcome you to another successful academic year at South Gate Middle school.

Our school is organized in two academies: AVID, LINKED Learning STEAM and a Dual Language program. Linked Learning is focused on creating multiple pathways in the areas of STEAM. Students are researching real life problems in the community and  applying their new found knowledge to help solve those problems. Our AVID academy is leading the way in engaging students to think about college and beyond. The Dual Language program focuses on science instruction in both languages, English and Spanish.

In addition to those academies, South Gate Middle school hosts a Magnet school that excels in comparison with other schools in the district. South Gate Middle school houses approximately 317 students in grades 6-8 and they focus on STEM education.

South Gate Middle School also has many opportunities to explore the use of technology.  Verizon has donated Ipads for students to take home and our IT department has invested in chromebooks for all classrooms. This year we are the recipients of a technology grant from Verizon.

This year, we are adding an additional pathway for student learning through a new elective that allows students to explore different careers in the fields of science and engineering. Paxton Labs is in partnership with our school to create a state of the art lab where students can apply and learn about exciting careers.

In addition to all those academic opportunities, our staff is constantly reflecting and revisiting their instructional practices. Recently, we were awarded a 6 year WASC accreditation. We are one of the few middle Schools in the district with this distinguished recognition. We have partnerships with East LA college and offer dual enrollment in computer Science instruction.

Many academic opportunities await you as you become a Viking. Once a Viking, Always a Viking!

Sincerely,
