Welcome to Miss Malloy's 7th and 8th grade Reading class

Students were placed in this class because their STAR score was 2-5 grade levels below their grade in school. They will take the STAR test several times this year to see if they improved in their reading skills. I've been told they would be placed in art or music or dance, etc. at the semester if they have at least a 6.0 by that time and there is room in one of those electives. (However, they may be placed in the math intervention elective if they are behind in that too.)

This year we will read informational texts and fiction books individually and in partnerships (in class and at home) and take quizzes on many AR books to read a million words outside the instructional day and do well on the Smarter Balanced testing online in the spring.

There will also be many assignments to help the students improve in English. These are usually done in class, but may have to be finished at home. They cover vocabulary, grammar, analogies, understanding nonfiction selections, and writing, etc.

Class Expectations

I have some basic expectations of your student in my class.

Students are expected to: LEARN, SHARE, BE RESPECTFUL, COME PREPARED (with supplies and work), DO ALL ASSIGNMENTS, FOLLOW ALL RULES, PUT AWAY AND TURN OFF ALL ELECTRONICS (AR quizzes acceptable only) AND NOT TO EAT (not even gum) OR DRINK ANYTHING (other than water) IN CLASS.

Good attendance will help students get instruction and keep up with assignments. It is the student's responsibility to ask for, and make up missed work, which is due the day after an excused absence.
